Beyond Basics: Shirts III
Level 3: red and white stripes. True red is a difficult color to use in classic menswear, but done right it can look great. The first step is, again, finding the right cloth: the stripes should not be too thin to blend together completely nor too wide to make you look like an icecream vendor. For most men, between 2 and 4mm wide stripes work best. Stay on the wider side if you are bigger, smaller if you are… well, smaller. The red and white stripes should be of the same width, so as not to complicate the matter further. A very good, basic combination with this type of shirt is that of solid navy suit and solid brown tie. As far as pocket squares go, we recommend white linen with green border or a cream paisley. Once you feel comfortable in this outfit, you can move even further and experiment with this shirt.
